Sam Winchester

Sam didn't catch Dean saying goodnight, since he was already asleep - or maybe he did. Either way, he didn't reply, simply letting sleep pull him under.

Maybe he didn't have to talk about Jess, but he could still remember it and think about it over and over till it drove him insane. At least when he was thinking about it he had a choice to try and think about something else... Dreaming was different.

He could see her on the ceiling again... the fire burst out around her and she was burning... It was more vivid now that he had seen it for real. The heat, the smell of smoke, the need and desperation to try and get to her, but he couldn't. If he had got there before... then she might have been able to make it.

Then the fire went back, but she was still on the ceiling, still staring down. The fire burst out from behind her, and the whole thing started again. Over and over...

Sam jerked awake, breathing hard.

Dean woke up at the sound of Sam's heavy breathing, and the feeling of Sam jolting awake in his arms. He blinked hard, trying to wake up himself. He had predicted that this would happen, and he was glad that he was here with Sam to see it through. He wouldn't be surprised if it was the first - well, not quite the first - of many. What Sam had seen - it was horrible. He'd probably be having nightmares for a while.

"Bad dream?" Dean asked, his voice a little scratchy from sleep. He tilted his head so that he could make out Sam's face better, though it was difficult to see much in the dark motel room, with the lights off.

Sam swallowed. "Yeah." he muttered, sliding out from under the covers and sitting at the edge of the bed. Damn it, he had already seen her die about three times already. He couldn't watch her die again... not Jess again... Wasn't it enough that she was gone already? Hadn't it been proven that leaving her to go find dad was wrong already? God... Sam couldn't do anything else. Everything had already happened.

He put his head in his hands again. He'd be okay... in a while.

Dean waited a few seconds, before following Sam to the edge of the bed, sitting next to him. He had his head buried in his hands, floppy hair hanging down in front of his eyes. Dean sighed, and put an arm around his shoulders, giving his arm a squeeze.

"You want to talk about it?" Dean asked, waiting for an answer. He was unsure of whether Sam would, but it was only right to ask. If it made Sam feel better to share, then he could do that, and if not then that would be fine as well.

To think that a week ago he'd not spoken to Sam in two years, he was hunting with his dad on and off, and Sam was happy in college. It was ridiculous how fast things had changed.

Sam wasn't sure. Should he talk about it? But if he did then he would have to say how he'd seen Jessica die before it had even happened... and surely that would freak out Dean, which was never good. Although then he might actually be able to sleep without it hanging over him. Would he even be able to talk about it? They had after all not even seen or spoke to each other in years, and now suddenly he was all with the sharing everything to Dean now that they were back in each other's lives? It didn't seem right. And besides, he wouldn't want Dean to think this was more than what he knew. Because it shouldn't be.

"No." He shook his head. He didn't want to talk.

"Alright," Dean said, keeping his features and tone carefully neutral. He glanced back over his shoulder. The sheets were in disarray from where Sam had bolted out of bed, the duvet thrown back. If Sam didn't want to talk about it, the what could they do now? Going back to sleep sounded good to him, but he doubted Sam would get any more. They obviously couldn't go do the shopping for Sam's clothes now, seeing as nothing would be open at this time of the night, or morning for that matter. They could just talk, though Dean was wary that any conversation topic would eventually link back to the Jess's death a few hours ago.

"Do you want to go back to sleep?" Dean settled on, seeing as it was as good a question as any. Sam really did need his sleep, especially with all of these nightmares that kept on coming.

Sleep sounded appealing right now. Hell, Sam didn't want to have to face anything, and sleep seemed to be the best option. And he was tired - if he was tired enough he wouldn't have to dream, which sounded like at least one good thing that could happen.

"Sure." he answered truthfully. Whether he would be able to was something else. He stood up, looking back at Dean still sitting on his bed. "Um... would you mind...?" he started to ask, hoping that Dean would get the message so he didn't have to spell out 'I don't really feel like sleeping next to you'.

Dean got the message, and he pulled a face as he looked towards his bed, "You're kicking me out right after dumping your crap all over my bed?" he looked back at Sam, giving him a mock glare, "Real sweet of you, Sammy."

Nonetheless, Dean pushed himself up, walking over to his bed. Sure enough the M&Ms had started melting, and it really didn't look good. Looking at it with irritation, he pulled the sheet off the bed, throwing it on the floor. He could see stains from where the chocolate had melted through the sheet, though it did not look as bad as it did before.

Sam rolled his eyes, getting back in to bed. They would have melted in his pocket probably, and it wouldn't be good when he put his cell phone in there... His cell phone was the only electrical thing he actually had. There were a few pictures of Jess on there. That was all he had left of her. That and his memory...

He faced the other way and tried to sleep again, trying not to think about what it would be like when morning came.

Dean screwed his face up in distaste, but got in anyway. He was tired, and if any got on his clothes then he could always give them a wash, even if it was unpleasant. He lay down on his back, perilously close to the edge in an attempt to stay as far away from the melted m&ms as possible.

Closing his eyes, Dean willed sleep to come. Hopefully they'd be able to get through the night without any more nightmares. He had a feeling that the next day was going to be awkward enough what with earlier, without anything else to add to that.

Sam tried to sleep, but he had been wrong about being nightmare free. He tossed and turned restlessly, with the pain etched in on his face as he tried to think of anything that wasn't related to Jessica or her death.

But that was it now, wasn't it? Supernatural killed her... though supernatural was their lives. It was their job to get rid of the supernatural... but they had failed this time. He wasn't sure if it was better that he could or couldn't have done something. Well, nothing seemed to make it better.

Dean could hear the bed creaking every time Sam moved about in it, waking him up every time he got close to falling asleep. Dean frowned, trying to ignore it. He could understand why Sam had kicked him out of the bed, it had been pretty weird, even for them. Though still, he seemed intent on keeping Dean awake, with the m&ms, and the level of noise he was making.

"Could you cut it out?" he groaned, after a while, turning on his side to face Sam, not really knowing if his brother was awake or asleep, though he himself was half asleep, his mind a little fuzzy.

Not hearing him, Sam continued. He was seeing the fire again. It had apparently, not had enough of torturing him yet and Jess burst into flames again. Sam gasped, gripping at the sheets, tightly.

If she had known the truth about the supernatural, maybe she would have been ready if something was going to attack her... but then she would only have seen evil. God... this was killing him.

Was he having another nightmare? Dean blinked, trying to clear the fuzziness left from closing his eyes left from trying to get to sleep. Dean sat up in his bed after a few seconds, looking at Sam. He was definitely still dreaming, and probably having a nightmare again. Dean supposed that he should probably try and wake Sam up. Bring him out of his misery.

"Sam," he said, raising his voice, as he walked over to stand above Sam's bed, looking down on him, "Wake up, dude. You're having another one of those nightmares."

Sam didn't wake up, though his nightmare seemed to be leaving as Dean was telling him to wake up. He faintly heard Dean's voice as the fire ebbed away along with Jess. Like when Dean had pulled him out of that burning building.

He started to settle, turning once more, towards Dean this time, and falling into a deeper sleep. His face, however, still showed his grief.

At seeing Sam settle down, the worst of the nightmare seemingly over, Dean lingered for a moment. His expression as he slept was far from happy, but it was an improvement on the one of a few moments before. Satisfied that Sam was good for now, Dean turned back to his own bed, getting in so that he was facing Sam.

He stared at Sam for a while, just watching out for further indications that something was wrong, before his eyes started to droop, and he could feel himself falling asleep.

Sam was properly asleep now that the nightmare had passed. It seemed that maybe for the last few hours he'd get that night he would be able to be at peace, otherwise that was just downright evil. Especially how hard it would be on Dean, who would probably feel like he had to watch over him.

And so a few hours passed by and then it was daylight again. The daylight that Jessica would never see again, although she should have.

Dean slowly opened his eyes as the sunlight coming from the window penetrated his eyelids. He turned his head away from the sun, squeezing his eyes shut and trying to clock out the light, face pressed up against his pillow. He just wanted a few more minutes sleep before he had to get up.

It was probably about another ten minutes before he finally started to wake up, the memories from the previous day coming back to him. Oh, crap. Dean glanced over at Sam, who was still sleeping. Jessica, the fire... this was not going to be fun. Then there was the ever so slightly embarrassing incident last night, with the bed sharing. Today was going to be all kinds of awkward, and Sam was likely going to go all emo, though this time he had a good reason to.

When Sam woke up he didn't move for a long while, not even thinking about if Dean would notice or not. He couldn't help think about Jess and the day she wouldn't see. The day she should have lived to see... It was his fault.

He swallowed painfully, shutting his eyes again. He wasn't ready for this - to face the world without Jessica in it. And Dean, who was probably wondering what the hell he was meant to do with Sam going all emo again. They had obviously spent a lot of time apart, since it was so awkward now what Sam did that...

Dean was staring up at the ceiling. He was awake, but not planning on getting up any time soon. He waiting for Sam to wake up so that they could figure out what they were going to do now. What Dean really wanted to do was get on with finding their dad, but he wasn't about to do it with Sam like this. Sam had just lost his girlfriend, and their dad could wait a bit. Though he could not afford to put it off for too long, especially if he was in trouble.

After a while, getting bored of the silence, Dean looked over at Sam, "Are you awake?" Sam's eyes were shut, so there was probably not much point in asking. Still, on the off chance that he was awake...

Sam didn't want to reply but he knew he would have to eventually when Dean worked out he really was awake. He didn't want to be, though.

"Yeah." he said, after Dean had broken the silence with his question. What would have been the point in asking him if he was asleep, anyway? Like he could say no if he was asleep... "How'd you sleep on the M&Ms?" he asked.

"Just great," Dean grumbled sarcastically, rolling his eyes. He was pretty sure he had a sticky brown patch on his T shirt. He looked down at it, trying to get a closer look. Yeah, definitely got chocolate on it. Was it really necessary for Sam to throw m&ms on his bed?

"What about you?" he asked, trying to mask the concern in the question, make it seem a little more casual, "Did you sleep okay?"

Sam hadn't slept okay at all. Apart from the last few peaceful hours, he didn't think the sleeping would improve for a long time. The worst was hopefully over, though, for now.

"I'll live." he said, bitterly, before getting out of bed.

Dean nodded, not commenting. When he had woke up the previous night, with Sam tossing and turning, it had been blatantly obvious that he had not been sleeping well. Although the nightmare had seemed to abated when he got up to check on Sammy, he would not be surprised if it had came back later, when he was asleep.

"We're shopping today, right?" Dean asked, after a few moments silence. They kind of had to do some shopping, what with Sam not having any clothes, and lacking his laptop. After the fire all of Sam's possessions had pretty much been destroyed, other then what he had on him.

Sam shrugged. "Sure." he muttered, running a hand through his hair and then heading into the bathroom. There was the pile of clothes he'd abandoned on the floor in there from the night before. It was pretty weird for him to leave stuff in the bathroom. Sam was usually the tidier of the two. It was usually Dean's clothes that were lying around in there.

He picked them up. They smelt strongly of the smoke from the fire. He sighed and dropped them again, going over to the sink to splash water on his face.
